Creator of made-to-measure staircases: Escaliers Somme shows off its expertise

Straight or spiral, with or without ramps, in wood, stainless steel or glass: besides their obvious practicality and functionality, staircases must fit in perfectly with their surroundings and the style of the space that will house them. They must even match their owner. At least, this is Gilles Somme's the vision. A third-generation carpenter, he now heads up the eponymous company, labelled as a Living Heritage Company since 2015.

Based in Dieuze in Moselle since 2005, Escaliers Somme cultivates quite an original customer approach for the sector in that all its staircases are made to measure.

"There's no catalogue, but we do have a strong customer focus and aim to listen to our customers' needs" says Gilles Somme. Reinventing himself for each project is doubtless what drives the man at the head of the company, using not only advanced production equipment, but also, for the last 30 years, building a team around him that is capable of transmitting and enriching expertise within the business.

Receiving the Living Heritage Company (EPV) label in 2015, the company says that it faces two parallel challenges: responding to more prestigious projects that often exceed the manufacture of just a single staircase (in the latest Jean Chauvel restaurant in Boulogne-Billancourt for example, the Michelin starred chef entrusted Gilles Somme with all the elements of the decor, including flooring, panelling and furniture), and continuing to take on a multitude of smaller projects with just as much interest and professionalism, always with a single moto: making beauty accessible to everyone.
