The keeper of cutlery know-how in Thiers: the André Verdier cutlery house

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Verdier name has been engraved in the steel of its master cutlers’ blades. Located in Celles sur Durolles, near Thiers in the Puy-de-Dôme department, Aubry and Ronan Verdier, the 6th generation, now manage the family company which, since 1936, bears the name of their grandfather, André Verdier. The André Verdier house has had the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label since 2012, and is the keeper of cutlery know-how in Thiers, certifying that all its items are designed and produced in France. Let’s take a look behind the scenes at this grand old House founded in 1859.

From early childhood, these two brothers inherited the ancestral know-how of the master cutlers, but also the family spirit of innovation which has always guided the company toward modernity.

This policy now enables them to pursue this approach of 100% French production and, one could say, almost 100% Thiers-based production, because on top of its 4 production sites, the company works with a network of reciprocal subcontracts with local partners. Ronan Verdier has somewhat proudly announced that this type of organisation not only saves local jobs and preserves the Thiers basin’s cutlery expertise, but also reduces the impact that commercial exchanges have on the environment.

Since the 1980s, the André Verdier cutlery house has pursued its growth, notably by buying such brands as Scof and, more recently, Delarboulas, which has given the company access to the luxury world for the arts of the table.

Today, the company is recognised not only for the very high quality of its products, but also for their refinement and their design. These two notions now go hand in hand and generate new opportunities, such as partnerships signed jointly with the Michelin-starred chef Anne-Sophie Pic and the design agency C+B Lefèbvre, covering a prestigious line of stainless steel tableware, followed by a complete line designed for the most demanding gourmets.

Such gourmets will also enjoy a unique line of knives forged in a single piece of steel. A tour de force for these professional knives with their discerning design produced by Ronan Verdier, requiring the use of the latest state-of-the-art technologies.

Laguiole has presented a wide range of models, lines and colours for complete household collections or folding knives made by André Verdier. The company also regularly registers models and patents with the INPI, with a view to constantly improving the style, comfort and use of its products.

Recognised today for the mastery of its know-how, its wide range of products in several areas and on several levels, and its high-quality, original products, André Verdier exports around the world.
