Porcelain trail

The origin of Limousin’s industrial development in the 19th century, porcelain remains an important speciality of the region. The activity developed in Limoges thanks to the discovery of kaolin in 1768 in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche (40 km south of Limoges) and the initiative of intendant Turgot. All the materials needed to make porcelain were found in the ground: kaolin, quartz, feldspar, metal oxides to make the colours for decoration, wood transported on the River Vienne to fire the kilns, and water renowned for its purity. Come and pay tribute to these porcelain-makers and visit their workshops.
