The story of Chaumet began in 1780 and is intimately linked with the history of France. For five centuries, Paris has been renowned for the quality of the jeweller’s craft and it is entirely in in this tradition that at the end of the 18th century the House of Chaumet was founded by Marie-Etienne Nitot, who was to become the appointed jeweller first of Napoleon I and then of the European courts.

Today, the House of Chaumet carries on the skills passed down without interruption from generation to generation for over two centuries. It is in a former private mansion, at 12 place Vendôme, that Chaumet receives clients and houses the haute-joaillerie workshop in which the finest pieces are crafted. Jewellers, setters and polishers pool their traditional skills and techniques to realise the creations of the design studio, which are usually made to measure. It is here at 12 place Vendôme that Chaumet guards its heritage dating from 1830 – that of the period 1780 to 1830 being in the National Archives – an exceptional collection of albums and original photographs, books on pearls and stones, accounts books, letters and old models of diadems and jewels. In recent years, Chaumet has turned increasingly to the international market and its creations – jewellery, haute-joaillerie and timepieces are sold in 61 ‘Chaumet’ shops worldwide: in France and the rest of Europe, in the Near and Middle East, Near Asia and the Far East (Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong).
