The company’s origins go back to the 1980s when André Camus encouraged craftsmen to become interested in resonance wood, hitherto somewhat neglected.

The activities commenced with the company Scierie Jacquemard at Chapelle sur Furieuse. Since 1992 the company has expanded and become established in Fertans in Doubs.

The company’s activities cover the entire process, from forest to instrument. Thanks to the combined experience of foresters and instrument makers within the company, Le Bois de Lutherie specialises in the selection and preparation of wood for the manufacture of instruments, particular those used in quartets. Only three sawmills in France supply wood to manufacturers of musical instruments.

The main species offered by the company are maple and spruce, followed by fruit trees. The company’s specialised nature lies in the selection of quality wood (straight grain, absence of knots and tension, textural quality) and the sawing process tailored to instrument manufacture.

Le Bois de Lutherie works for instrument makers in France and abroad and also supplies organ and harpsichord manufacturers. The remainder of activities are devoted to the organisation of courses in instrument making.
